Nurses Tackle Yr Wyddfa to Raise Funds for Guide Dogs UK

A dedicated group of six nurses from the eye clinic at Wrexham Maelor Hospital is preparing to tackle the challenge of climbing Yr Wyddfa, the highest peak in Wales, to raise funds for Guide Dogs UK. The team, consisting of Davi Castano, Kelly Arrowsmith, Anwen Jones, Kathryn Newcombe, and Kim Klee, will undertake this ambitious hike on September 13, 2023.
The initiative was inspired by their colleague, John Carruthers, an eye clinic liaison officer who relies on his guide dog, Gryffin, for mobility. “John organised a talk about Guide Dogs and how the dogs are trained,” explained nurse Kim Klee. “A group of us attended and decided to raise money for Guide Dogs.”
The team has engaged in various training activities, including walking and hill climbing, to prepare for the ascent. Their fundraising goal of £500 has already been exceeded, with the nurses raising an impressive total of £640 for the charity so far.
According to Guide Dogs UK, nearly two million people in the UK live with sight loss that significantly impacts their daily lives. Among this number, approximately 180,000 individuals rarely leave their homes alone, which can lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation. This challenge not only aims to raise funds but also to increase awareness about the importance of assistance dogs in enhancing the lives of those with visual impairments.
Supporters can learn more about the nurses’ challenge and contribute to their fundraising efforts via JustGiving. The initiative highlights the commitment of the healthcare professionals to improve the lives of those in their community while also promoting physical fitness and teamwork.
