Last weekend, the tourist organization of Podgorica hosted an event titled “Podgorica Through the Ages,” showcasing the city’s historical development from antiquity to modern times. The event took place on Saturday and Sunday, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the various eras that have shaped the capital of Montenegro.

The event spanned five significant locations: Sastavci, Depedogen Fortress, the Clock Tower, the Risto Stijović Gallery, and the Čubranović House in the Old Town. Each venue highlighted a distinct period in the city’s history, allowing attendees to experience the evolution of Podgorica firsthand.

Exploring Historical Eras

Slađana Rabrenović, a representative from the tourist organization, explained the significance of the event, stating that it aimed to present Podgorica’s growth across five key epochs. “The first era starts at Sastavci, where an authentic Roman caravan from that period is on display. At the fortress above Sastavci, we showcase medieval Podgorica and the four dynasties that ruled during that time,” Rabrenović noted.

The event also featured the Ottoman period at the Clock Tower, highlighting aspects of life in the 15th century that are unique to that era. Visitors could delve into the cultural and architectural heritage of this time, gaining insight into the city’s diverse influences.

19th Century and Modern Podgorica

The Risto Stijović Gallery represented the Montenegrin era of the 19th century, where attendees could view artifacts and exhibits that reflect the life and culture of that time. “This gallery captures the essence of the Montenegrin epoch, showcasing everything related to that period,” Rabrenović added.

At the Čubranović House, the oldest preserved house in Podgorica, the focus shifted to modern Podgorica. This exhibit illustrated the city’s transformation into a contemporary urban center, highlighting changes in architecture, lifestyle, and community.

The event attracted a diverse audience, with many attendees expressing appreciation for the opportunity to learn about Podgorica’s rich history. The combination of historical displays and engaging narratives provided a captivating experience for both locals and tourists.

Overall, “Podgorica Through the Ages” served not only as a celebration of the city’s past but also as an opportunity to foster community pride and tourism. As Podgorica continues to evolve, events like these play a crucial role in preserving and sharing its storied heritage.
