Transform Pink Hydrangeas to Blue with Kitchen Vinegar Trick

Turning pink hydrangeas into vibrant blue blooms can be achieved using a simple household item, according to gardening expert Mel from the blog Little Terraced House. This affordable method requires just apple cider vinegar and a bit of patience, providing an accessible solution for garden enthusiasts seeking to add a splash of color.
The color of hydrangea flowers, which can range from pink to blue and even mauve, is influenced primarily by the pH level of the soil. Specifically, alkaline soils typically produce pink flowers, while acidic soils yield blue blooms. Neutral soils tend to result in mauve or purple hues, as reported by Express.
To transform pink blooms into striking blue ones, Mel recommends using apple cider vinegar to acidify the soil. This common kitchen item can effectively alter the soil’s pH, making it possible to achieve the desired color without expensive products or lengthy waiting periods.
Simple Steps to Achieve Blue Hydrangeas
Mel outlines a straightforward approach for gardeners. First, it is advisable to test the soil’s pH using a budget-friendly pH testing kit available at garden centers. The change in the hydrangea’s color can also provide a clear indication of the soil’s acidity.
For those aiming for the elusive blue shade, the method is easy: mix one cup of apple cider vinegar with 10 liters of water, approximately one full watering can. Pour this solution directly at the base of the hydrangea every couple of weeks, ensuring that the leaves remain dry. While the color change will not occur immediately, over time the blooms will gradually adopt a richer blue hue. Once the desired shade is achieved, the application of vinegar can be reduced or halted entirely.
“You can control the ‘bluing’ by adjusting how much you use,” Mel explained, emphasizing the versatility of this technique for both ground and container-grown hydrangeas. For those growing hydrangeas in pots, starting with ericaceous compost can provide an initial advantage for achieving blue flowers.
Combining Hydrangea Varieties and Cautions
Mel enjoys the aesthetic of combining various hydrangea varieties, such as pairing a white hydrangea in a pot with a larger pink-and-blue specimen planted in the ground. However, she cautions that excessive use of vinegar can potentially harm a plant’s roots, highlighting the importance of moderation.
In her experience, this technique has not resulted in any damage. “It’s a surprisingly simple trick,” she noted. “You don’t need pricey products or long waits, just a splash of vinegar and a little patience.” This method offers a practical and economical way for gardeners to enhance their landscapes and enjoy the beauty of blue hydrangeas.
