The Highland League community is mourning the loss of a cherished figure, as Sandra Paterson, known affectionately as “Mrs Buckie Thistle,” passed away on August 26, 2023. Her dedication to the club, spanning over 36 years, made her a beloved presence among fans at Victoria Park and beyond.

Paterson, the longest-serving committee member and volunteer for Buckie Thistle, began her journey with the club in 1989, serving alongside her aunt, Annie Jappy. Initially working in the tea hut on match days, she quickly became known for her homemade cakes, which delighted Jags supporters at every home game. Her commitment extended beyond the confines of Victoria Park, as she passionately followed the team on away games, travelling with “her boys” on the team bus.

Her association with Buckie Thistle began memorably, as she witnessed a match against Celtic on her first day at Victoria Park. Thirty-five years later, she relived that experience by attending a Scottish Cup clash at Parkhead, which she described as an “experience of a lifetime.”

The club expressed its deep sorrow over her passing, acknowledging her “tremendous 36 years of service.” In a statement, they emphasized that she would be “missed throughout the Highland League.” Condolences poured in for her family, including her husband Allan, a former committee member, and her children, Vicki, Shaun, and Euan.

Easton Thain, the club historian, paid tribute to Paterson, calling her one of the “greatest ever” contributors to Buckie Thistle. He remarked, “I was deeply saddened to hear of Sandra’s passing. My heart goes out to Allan, Euan, Shaun, Vicki, and all the family at this sad time.” Thain highlighted her welcoming nature and her legendary half-time food, stating, “She will forever be in our hearts and thoughts. Mrs Buckie Thistle, thanks for the memories and sleep well. RIP and God bless.”

Former Thistle director and local councillor, Marc Macrae, also shared his memories of Paterson, recalling her passion and dedication. He said, “During her time on the board, her passion for her beloved Jags was second to none. On match days, her hospitality skills were legendary, and she never failed in her duties or support.” Macrae emphasized that her memory would be cherished by many who had the privilege of knowing her.

On social media, Sandra’s daughter, Vicki Clamp, expressed the family’s heartbreak, stating, “Today our world changed forever as we lost our beautiful, kind, and loving mam. We were lucky to call her our Mam, but she meant a lot to so many others. Our hearts are truly broken.”

As the Highland League community reflects on Paterson’s legacy, her impact on both Buckie Thistle and the lives of those who knew her is undeniable. The warmth and dedication she brought to her role will be remembered fondly by all.
