Thousands of displaced Palestinians began moving towards Gaza City on Friday, following the announcement of a ceasefire. Reports from Al Jazeera indicate that many are using Rashid Street to make their way into the city. Concurrently, Israeli tanks were observed withdrawing from areas near the Jordanian Hospital in southern Gaza City.

Details of the Ceasefire Agreement

The ceasefire marks the initial phase of a US-backed agreement between Israel and Hamas. As part of this arrangement, the Israeli military announced preparations to “partially” withdraw troops to a designated line. Under the terms of the deal, Hamas is expected to release approximately 20 living captives and the remains of about 25 others. In return, Israel will release around 2,000 Palestinians currently detained in Israeli prisons.

On the same day, the Interior Ministry of Gaza issued a statement indicating plans to restore order in areas from which Israeli forces have recently withdrawn. The ministry urged citizens to exercise caution as the ceasefire takes effect, highlighting ongoing Israeli blockades of the roads between northern and southern Gaza.

Public Safety Concerns

In its statement, the ministry emphasized the importance of public safety during this transitional period. “We call on citizens to be careful before the ceasefire comes into effect, to ensure their safety,” the statement read. As thousands of displaced individuals converge on Gaza City, the need for security and order remains paramount.

The announcement of the ceasefire has brought a glimmer of hope to many within the region, yet challenges persist as the situation evolves. The international community continues to monitor developments closely, underscoring the fragile nature of peace efforts amid ongoing conflict.
