Eurostar Reports Fast Processing Times with New Border System
The implementation of a new border control system at London’s St Pancras railway station has shown promising results, according to Eurostar’s chief safety and stations officer, Simon Lejeune. The system, known as the Entry Exit System (EES), has enabled some passengers to complete their processing in as little as 50 seconds. This new initiative began on October 1, 2023, and is designed to streamline the entry of third-party country nationals, such as those from the United Kingdom, into the Schengen area, which comprises 29 European countries.
At the core of the EES are biometric checks, which include fingerprint registration and photographic identification. For the majority of UK travelers, these processes will take place at foreign airports. However, those departing from St Pancras, the Port of Dover, and Eurotunnel’s Folkestone terminal will undergo these checks in the UK, marking a significant shift in how border control is managed for cross-Channel travel.
Efficient Processing Times at St Pancras
During a recent session of the House of Lords Justice and Home Affairs Committee, Lejeune highlighted the efficiency of the new system. He noted that the current processing at St Pancras is being conducted exclusively by French border officers, who have achieved “really good transaction times.” He stated, “I was observing transaction times of 50 seconds. That’s for the full biometrics, as well as the passport check and the stamping for EES-eligible passengers.”
Eurostar has prepared three designated areas within St Pancras, equipped with a total of 49 kiosks where passengers can pre-register for the EES. This pre-registration process is expected to enhance efficiency further, with plans to introduce additional kiosks in the coming weeks.
Lejeune expressed optimism about the system, describing initial results as “quite encouraging.” While the current setup relies solely on French border officers, the augmentation of the kiosks will likely improve processing times even more.
The introduction of the EES represents a significant development in border management for travelers between the UK and Europe. As Eurostar adapts to these changes, the focus remains on ensuring a smooth and efficient travel experience for all passengers.
