Fulham has lost one of its most cherished residents, Lil Francis, who passed away at the age of 101 on August 23, 2023. Known for her unwavering spirit and dedication to family, Lil spent her entire life in the affluent West London area. Her grandson, Jamie McFarlane, reflected on her legacy, stating, “Lil was proud to have lived her whole life in Fulham, surrounded by family through to the end of her long and full life.”

From Humble Beginnings to a Life of Service

Born on Cassidy Road in 1924, Lil was the second youngest of ten siblings. She attended Ackmar Road Primary School and later New Kings Road School. As World War II erupted, Lil and her youngest brother were evacuated to Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, where they contributed to the war effort by manufacturing armatures and stirrup pumps for two years before returning home.

In 1943, she married George Francis, with whom she had three children. The couple’s legacy extends to six grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Following their marriage, the family moved to Sulivan Court and later to Clem Attlee Court, an estate currently recognized as one of the most deprived in England. Lil and George enjoyed a remarkable 49 years of marriage until George’s passing in 1992.

A Life of Hard Work and Joyful Memories

Known for her robust work ethic, Lil held various cleaning jobs throughout South Kensington and Earls Court. She eventually found a place at Kodak on Rylston Road, where she worked as a photographer for thirteen years, documenting maps and documents. Even after retiring, she continued to work until the age of 80, always embracing life’s challenges with determination.

Despite her hardworking nature, Lil also cherished moments of joy. She enjoyed nights out dancing at the former Hammersmith Palais on Shepherds Bush Road and took pleasure in trips to Selsey in West Sussex. Her ability to balance work and leisure contributed to the rich tapestry of her long life.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate Lil’s remarkable life at her funeral on September 30, 2023. Jamie shared a touching memory, stating, “We did all get to share a bright and sunny day together. Once again nan was lucky with the weather, and I’m sure it would have made her smile.”

Lil Francis leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and a deep connection to her community in Fulham. Her life story, marked by dedication to family and service, continues to inspire those who knew her.
