Highland Hospice Engages in Talks to Transform Ullapool Care Home

Discussions are underway regarding the potential conversion of Ullapool’s former Mo Dhachaidh Care Home, now known as Taigh Mór, into residential flats. The building’s owner, Highland Hospice, is exploring options with Albyn Housing Society to transform the upper floor of the facility into living accommodations.
In January 2024, Highland Hospice acquired the former care home. The organization is renting the ground floor to NHS Highland, which will generate steady income for the charity while ensuring the building’s ongoing use. Highland Hospice aims to secure a future for Taigh Mór that benefits the local community.
Albyn Housing Society currently owns the staff accommodation blocks associated with the former care home. The organization has outlined a plan worth £1.1 million to convert these blocks into four one-bedroom accessible housing flats. This initiative reflects a growing need for accessible housing in the area.
As part of their commitment to community benefit, Highland Hospice has been in positive discussions with Albyn Housing Society about the possibility of converting the upper floor of Taigh Mór into additional flats. A spokesperson for Highland Hospice stated, “As owners of Taigh Mór in Ullapool, Highland Hospice wants to see it used in a way that benefits the local community. The ground floor is let to NHS Highland, and we are having a positive conversation with Albyn Housing Association about converting the upper floor to flats.”
The potential transformation of Taigh Mór represents a significant opportunity to enhance local housing options while supporting the mission of Highland Hospice. Further updates are expected as discussions progress.
