Inquest Reveals Circumstances Surrounding Keith Williams’ Drowning

An inquest has concluded that 78-year-old Keith Williams drowned in the Taff Bargoed river on February 11, 2024, but the circumstances leading to his entry into the water remain unclear. Williams was reported missing by his family at 03:07 on February 10, 2024, prompting a search that ultimately led to his discovery in the river.
During the proceeding at Pontypridd Coroners’ Court, Coroner Kerrie Burge detailed Williams’ health struggles. He had faced ongoing physical health issues and associated low mood for many years. Williams received support from the community mental health team, which was highlighted during the inquest.
On August 3, 2023, Williams experienced a medication overdose, but following this incident, he reportedly expressed regret and denied any suicidal intentions. The court noted that consultations with health professionals from December 2023 to February 2024 did not reveal any immediate concerns regarding self-harm.
Burge stated, “Sadly, Keith was found deceased in the Taff Bargoed river on February 11, 2024.” She recorded a narrative conclusion indicating that while Williams died by drowning, the reasons for his entry into the water and his intentions at that time could not be determined.
At the time of his death, Williams lived in Treharris and was married. The inquest brought to light the complexities surrounding mental health and the challenges that individuals may face.
