The Irish Government has allocated over €15 million to humanitarian aid initiatives supporting nations across the Middle East. This announcement was made by Diaspora Minister Neale Richmond, who outlined funding for various projects during a press briefing. Among the allocations are €6 million earmarked for the United Nations’ efforts in Yemen, €1 million directed to the UN High Commission for Refugees for Lebanon, and €1 million for UNICEF projects in Jordan. Additionally, €7.7 million will support UNICEF’s global operations.

“The situation across the Middle East remains dangerous and volatile,” Minister Richmond stated. He emphasized the urgent need for humanitarian support, particularly for the people of Gaza, who he described as facing unimaginable conditions. Richmond recently visited the United Arab Emirates, where he engaged in discussions with ministerial colleagues about enhancing support for Gaza’s residents.

This funding initiative reflects Ireland’s ongoing commitment to humanitarian causes. So far this year, the country has provided €29 million in aid to the Palestinian territories. Further announcements regarding additional support are anticipated in the coming weeks. “I will announce further humanitarian support for crises across the region,” Richmond confirmed.

The Minister highlighted that these humanitarian efforts illustrate Ireland’s dedication to prioritizing aid for the most vulnerable populations. “We support the UN and the multilateral system,” he affirmed, noting that Ireland is actively working to ensure the UN is equipped to handle the complex crises of today.

Richmond underscored the importance of core funding for trusted agencies, including UNICEF, which continues its critical work in Gaza and other conflict zones. The Irish Government’s commitment to humanitarian aid not only addresses immediate needs but also aims to reinforce the overall resilience of communities affected by conflict and instability in the Middle East.
