Jonathan Ashworth Critiques Farage’s Claims on Working People
The Labour Party Conference commenced in Liverpool today, with former shadow Health Secretary Jonathan Ashworth delivering a pointed critique of Nigel Farage and the alternatives to Labour’s policies. Ashworth argued that both Reform and Conservative Party proposals would lead to significant cuts in vital services, pushing more children into severe hardship.
Reflecting on his long history with Labour Conferences, Ashworth emphasized the importance of presenting a clear vision for the future. He noted that the party is most effective when it prioritizes its mission of fairness and opportunity. “What matters is whether your team sets out a vision of the future and delivers for the country,” he stated.
One of Ashworth’s key focuses is the National Health Service (NHS), which he credited Labour with establishing to alleviate suffering across the nation. He highlighted that a Labour government would invest in the NHS, utilizing advancements in science and artificial intelligence to reduce waiting times and enhance care quality.
To support working individuals, Labour is committed to increasing the minimum wage while also providing greater protections for employees. Ashworth pointed out that under Conservative leadership, a million young people were left without work opportunities. Labour’s new initiatives aim to reform skills provision and welfare-to-work programs, aiming to create a better future for the younger generation.
Ashworth has consistently criticized the Conservative record on poverty, describing cuts to benefits, such as the two-child rule, as “heinous.” With the government set to publish its child poverty review soon, he called for urgent action, asserting, “It’s time for a big, bold approach guaranteeing every child across our United Kingdom will matter again.”
Labour’s initiatives, which include expanding access to breakfast clubs and school dinners, are seen as foundational steps to combat child poverty. Keir Starmer emphasized the commitment to reducing child poverty, stating, “This is the clear intent of this government.” Ashworth underscored that only a Labour government can effectively address these issues and improve life opportunities for all citizens.
Critically, Ashworth denounced Farage’s portrayal as a champion of working people, labeling it as “snake oil” and a dangerous form of hyper-Thatcherism that would harm Labour communities. He asserted that Labour must actively demonstrate its purpose in politics, focusing on providing every child with a strong start, access to training, and the best possible NHS services.
In his address, Ashworth transitioned to celebrate cultural diversity in his constituency of Leicester. He mentioned the vibrant celebrations for the Hindu festival of Navratri and the upcoming Diwali festivities, reflecting pride in the city’s welcoming spirit. He acknowledged the significant contributions of international nurses and medical staff to the NHS, emphasizing that British values celebrate diversity.
Ashworth strongly criticized Farage’s proposed deportations of legal immigrants, asserting that such views represent divisive and harmful politics. He reiterated Labour’s commitment to inclusivity, stating, “Labour can’t stand on sidelines.”
On another note, Ashworth expressed disappointment over the departure of Angela Rayner from the Cabinet, referring to her as a “glittering superstar.” He voiced optimism for her potential return to politics and remarked on the ongoing contest for the position of Deputy Leader, praising both candidates, Lucy Powell and Bridget Philipson, as capable and intelligent politicians.
As Labour continues to navigate its internal dynamics and external challenges, Ashworth’s remarks serve as a reminder of the party’s focus on tackling pressing social issues and advocating for the working population. The ongoing discussions at the conference will shape Labour’s strategies as it seeks to position itself as a viable alternative to current government policies.
