Kington Town Council has been informed that it may receive funding of up to £200,000 for improvements to pavements, roads, and signage. This initiative is part of a renewed effort by Herefordshire’s market towns to enhance public infrastructure, similar to funding received after the COVID-19 pandemic.

During a recent meeting, town clerk Liz Kelso outlined the potential for this funding, emphasizing its importance for local improvements. Previously, the council utilized similar funds to resurface high streets and upgrade pavements. With the new funding, Kelso expressed a desire to extend these enhancements beyond the main streets, stating, “We did say at the time that if any further money became available, we would do the same work further out of the main streets.”

The funds must be allocated by the end of March 2026, prompting a sense of urgency in planning and executing the projects. To facilitate this process, Balfour Beatty, the contractors for Herefordshire Council, will collaborate closely with the town council. Kelso suggested forming a small group to engage in discussions with Herefordshire Council regarding feasible projects.

Philip Sell, Kington’s Mayor, along with Deputy Mayor Martin Woolford and Councillors Esther Rolls and Bob Widdowson, volunteered to participate in a working group. This group aims to brainstorm potential projects and will communicate with Herefordshire Council by October 3, 2023. Members agreed that it is crucial to gather ideas and present them effectively to ensure the funding is utilized efficiently for the town’s benefit.

The council’s proactive approach highlights its commitment to improving Kington’s public infrastructure, ensuring that the town remains a vibrant community for residents and visitors alike.
