Macron Criticizes Netanyahu’s Gaza Offensive, Urges Caution
French President Emmanuel Macron condemned Israel’s military actions in Gaza, asserting that they are severely damaging the country’s international standing. In an interview with Israeli broadcaster Channel 12, published on Thursday night, Macron stated, “These types of operations in Gaza are totally counterproductive; this is, I have to say, a failure.” He emphasized that the high number of civilian casualties is undermining Israel’s credibility and image globally.
The remarks come as the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) escalated their military operations in Gaza, which have intensified for nearly two years following the terrorist attack on October 7, 2022, carried out by Hamas. This week, the IDF launched a new ground offensive aimed at capturing Gaza City, further heightening tensions in the region.
Macron characterized the ongoing military campaign as “a huge mistake” and warned that it could prompt renewed discussions in Europe regarding the imposition of sanctions against individuals supporting Israeli settlements. His comments reflect deepening diplomatic strains between France and Israel, particularly following Macron’s announcement in late July about recognizing a Palestinian state. This move aligns France with other countries intending to support Palestinian statehood during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly on September 22, 2023.
The initiative has led to a heated exchange between Macron and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In a letter dated August 17, Netanyahu accused Macron of exacerbating antisemitism and legitimizing what he termed “Hamas terror” through his recognition of Palestinian statehood. Macron responded in his interview, expressing personal hurt over Netanyahu’s allegations, stating, “I think it’s a huge mistake on the part of your prime minister, because he is giving a justification to antisemitism.”
He defended France’s stance by arguing that recognizing Palestinian statehood is crucial for isolating Hamas and maintaining the viability of a two-state solution. Macron cautioned that the window for a peaceful resolution is rapidly closing, insinuating that the opportunity for a two-state solution may soon be lost entirely.
In reaction to France’s recognition initiative, Israeli officials are considering various countermeasures, including the potential closure of the French consulate in Jerusalem and accelerating annexations in the West Bank. These developments indicate a significant escalation in the diplomatic tensions between the two nations, with the ongoing conflict in Gaza serving as a backdrop to the unfolding political landscape.
Macron’s statements highlight the complex interplay of international politics, regional stability, and humanitarian concerns, underscoring the urgent need for dialogue and resolution in the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
