Police Officer Assaulted as Anti-Asylum Protests Escalate in London

A police officer was punched in the face during an anti-asylum protest in Canary Wharf, east London, on March 10, 2024. The incident occurred as tensions escalated between rival groups, with approximately 20 anti-migration demonstrators confronting around 100 counter-protesters. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that some of the demonstrators were masked and aggressive.

The protest unfolded outside a hotel where asylum seekers are being housed, following a recent court ruling that allowed their continued stay at the Bell Hotel in Epping, Essex. Demonstrators gathered with Union flags and children present, while counter-protesters held banners stating “stand up to racism” and “stop the far right.” The atmosphere quickly intensified, with chants from both sides, including “say it loud and say it clear, refugees are welcome here,” met with shouts of “no, they’re not.”

As the situation unfolded, a group of masked individuals entered a nearby shopping centre where they reportedly became aggressive towards members of the public and police. In response, the police made four arrests for various offences, including common assault on a civilian, possession of illegal drugs, and assault on police officers. One officer suffered a punch to the face but did not sustain serious injuries.

Police Response and Community Safety Measures

To manage the unrest, authorities implemented a Section 60AA order in the Isle of Dogs area, which grants officers the authority to demand the removal of face coverings. This order, along with a dispersal order, is intended to help prevent further violence and will remain in effect until midnight.

Commander Adam Slonecki, overseeing policing in London during the protests, emphasized the swift action taken by officers. He stated, “We had plenty of officers on the ground who moved in swiftly to deal with the criminality that occurred inside and outside the shopping centre.” Slonecki made it clear that such aggressive behaviour would not be tolerated and reassured the community of continued police presence to deter disorder.

He remarked on the diverse attendance at the protest, noting, “Today’s protest saw many community members attend, including women and children, and we worked to ensure the safety of those there to peacefully represent their views.” Slonecki warned that individuals arriving at protests masked and intent on causing trouble would face robust action in the future.
