Aberystwyth University Launches Research Group to Combat Global Atrocities

A new initiative aimed at combating global abuses of power has been launched at Aberystwyth University in Wales. The research team, established by Dr Dakota Ward from the University’s Law and Criminology Department, will focus on opposing the exploitation and manipulation of individuals and institutions worldwide.

Aberystwyth University has a strong history in peace studies, having previously supported various groups affected by conflict to create safe spaces for dialogue and recovery. The newly formed group, named the Prevention of Exploitation, Atrocities, Corruption and Extremism (PEACE), will connect faculty and students with external partners to enhance cooperation at local, national, and international levels.

Addressing Global Challenges

The PEACE group will initially concentrate on understanding and preventing key issues such as exploitation, atrocities, corruption, and extremism. This focus is particularly relevant given recent developments, as the International Criminal Court has indicted a total of 73 individuals for serious crimes, including genocide and war crimes, across multiple countries including Afghanistan, Georgia, Libya, Palestine, Uganda, and Ukraine.

Dr Ward, who received recognition from the Institute of Genocide and Mass Atrocity Prevention, expressed concern over the ongoing atrocities worldwide. “There is, very tragically, a long list of atrocities and abuses ongoing in the world today. I hope the new group will act as a hub for studying matters that can help tackle or solve these major global challenges,” she stated.

The university’s commitment to impactful research is evident in its ongoing projects related to conflict resolution, migration, and trauma. Dr Ward emphasized that these initiatives underline Aberystwyth’s dedication to being a significant international actor in addressing both local and global issues.
