After obtaining a PhD in Organic Chemistry, McDonald pursued roles in drug development, eventually joining BMS in Dublin as a development chemist at the Swords API facility. Here, he contributed to late-stage product development, a critical phase that leads to regulatory approval and commercialization of new therapies. His role as a subject matter expert involved visits to external contract manufacturing organisations (CMOs) to troubleshoot and ensure product delivery.

As BMS expanded its external manufacturing team across Europe and Ireland, McDonald transitioned to an external manufacturing chemist position, overseeing and providing technical support to CMOs globally. This experience allowed him to engage with a variety of cultures and operational practices, igniting a passion for external manufacturing. He later joined a virtual plant team, a collaborative group focusing on managing manufacturing operations, marking a significant shift from technical expertise to relationship management and strategic oversight.

Today, McDonald leads the drug product and packaging business unit for the EMEA region, navigating the complexities of a role that is both exciting and challenging. “No two days are the same in our business unit, and this is what makes the role interesting,” he noted. His responsibilities include tracking ongoing projects with his team, aligning them with business priorities, and collaborating with the leadership team to address immediate challenges and long-term strategic planning.

The biopharma industry is characterized by its multifaceted nature, encompassing science, operations, strategy, and quality. According to McDonald, individuals can choose to deepen their expertise as subject matter experts or broaden their experience across various functions. He stated, “Development isn’t always linear, and I truly believe in learning new skills and expanding your career horizons through building your capabilities via new roles, projects, or tours of duty.”

McDonald emphasized that a good leader inspires confidence and cultivates an environment where team members feel valued and empowered. He reflected on the impact of effective management, noting that his own career has been shaped by experiences with supportive mentors. “The importance of people management is profound. I have personally experienced the impact of how good leaders drive you on in your career,” he said.

He highlighted the importance of digital dexterity and the need for agility, resilience, and adaptability in a fast-changing geopolitical environment. “These types of skills, alongside the ability to build strong networks and influence, are hugely important for the workplace of the future,” he explained.

His advice for those entering the field is to maintain an open mindset towards discovery and to proactively seek out opportunities for development. “Take the opportunity to explore areas beyond your immediate role. Sometimes the things you don’t expect to enjoy can turn into long-term interests,” McDonald advised.
