Edinburgh Researchers Unveil AI Breakthrough, Boosting Speed Tenfold
Researchers at the University of Edinburgh have achieved a significant advancement in artificial intelligence (AI) technology, developing a system that could enable AI to process data and draw conclusions up to ten times faster. This breakthrough is expected to greatly benefit industries relying on large language models (LLMs), including finance, healthcare, and customer service applications such as chatbots.
The innovation stems from advancements in wafer-scale computer chips, which are the largest computer chips in existence, roughly the size of a medium chopping board. These chips can perform multiple tasks simultaneously due to their extensive on-chip memory and design. In contrast, current AI systems predominantly operate on networks of graphics processing units (GPUs), which require data to traverse between multiple smaller chips.
New Software Overcomes Existing Limitations
The major challenge in harnessing the potential of wafer-scale chips has been the software required to operate them. Researchers at the University of Edinburgh developed a new software system tailored for these chips, named WaferLLM. According to a series of tests conducted at the EPCC, the university’s supercomputing centre, the third-generation wafer-scale processors demonstrated a remarkable tenfold increase in response speed compared to a cluster of 16 GPUs.
In addition to their speed, wafer-scale chips were found to be significantly more energy-efficient. They consumed approximately half as much energy while running LLMs compared to traditional GPU systems. Dr. Luo Mai, the lead researcher and a reader at the university’s School of Informatics, emphasized the importance of this advancement, stating, “Wafer-scale computing has shown remarkable potential, but software has been the key barrier to putting it to work. With WaferLLM, we show that the right software design can unlock that potential, delivering real gains in speed and energy efficiency for large language models.”
Implications for Future AI Infrastructure
The findings from this pioneering research have been peer-reviewed and presented at a symposium on operating systems and design in July 2023. Professor Mark Parsons, director of EPCC and dean of research computing at the University of Edinburgh, praised Dr. Mai’s work, noting that it “shows how the cost of inference can be massively reduced.”
The university’s research team has made their findings available as open-source software, allowing other developers to create their own applications utilizing wafer-scale chips. This initiative could pave the way for a new generation of AI infrastructure capable of delivering real-time intelligence across various fields, including science, healthcare, and education.
