Innovative Start-ups to Showcase Microbiome Advances at Probiota 2026
Three pioneering start-ups—Microvitality, Totality Biosciences, and Luvbiotics—will present their groundbreaking advancements in microbiome science at the upcoming IPA World Congress + Probiota. Scheduled for February 11 to 13, 2026, at The Convention Centre, Dublin, this annual event marks its twelfth year of bringing together key stakeholders from the microbiome ecosystem, including industry leaders, researchers, investors, and regulatory experts.
The Probiota Pioneers platform will highlight emerging technologies and innovative business models set to define the future of microbiome research and product development. Each of the featured companies is uniquely positioned to address critical challenges in health through novel applications of microbiome science.
Microvitality: Transforming Diagnostics
Based in Boston, Microvitality is making significant strides in gastrointestinal health with its precision microbiome diagnostics. The company’s flagship product is a non-invasive ingestible capsule that samples the small intestine. This technology yields precise microbiome and immune biomarker data, offering insights that traditional stool tests or invasive procedures, such as endoscopies, cannot provide.
The initial application of this technology targets Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), a condition that impacts approximately 1.8 billion people worldwide and is often either undiagnosed or mismanaged. In addition to diagnostics, the platform facilitates patient stratification for drug development and personalized nutrition, ultimately bridging the gap between preclinical research and clinical outcomes. By providing organ-specific, high-quality data, Microvitality empowers healthcare professionals to make more informed decisions, enhancing patient care and speeding up innovations in gut health.
Totality Biosciences: Leading in Synthetic Biology
At the forefront of synthetic biology is Totality Biosciences, which leverages genetically engineered plants to produce human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs). Co-founded by Patrick Shih, a scientist from UC Berkeley, the company aims to revolutionize HMO production, offering a catalogue that supports a thriving microbiome from infancy onward.
Totality Biosciences’ technology has the potential to produce five times more HMO structures for product development than existing research and development libraries. It boasts the capability to produce all 200 HMOs found in breast milk at scale, addressing the current shortfall in supply. According to peer-reviewed research published in Nature Foods, the company’s approach could lead to a tenfold reduction in the minimum selling price compared to microbial production. By democratizing access to full-spectrum HMOs, Totality Biosciences aims to improve health outcomes for pre-term infants and optimize health throughout life.
Luvbiotics: Innovating Oral Health
From the UK, Luvbiotics is dedicated to enhancing oral health through its probiotic oral care products. Developed by a team of microbiologists, the brand focuses on creating formulations that support a balanced oral microbiome, crucial for overall health.
Luvbiotics products are crafted with scientifically validated probiotics and natural ingredients, free from harmful substances like SLS, parabens, and alcohol. This commitment to protecting microbial diversity and oral ecology aligns with the growing consumer demand for natural, microbiome-friendly care. The company’s expanding product range includes probiotic toothpastes, mouthwashes, and lozenges, all designed to meet the needs of health-conscious consumers. Through education, professional partnerships, and consumer trust, Luvbiotics is poised for global expansion.
The IPA World Congress + Probiota 2026 will feature various sessions and discussions, including topics like “From Gums to Bums,” which will explore innovations across the digestive tract, and “Next-Gen Biotics,” focusing on the latest advancements in microbiome-based products. Registration for the event is now open, inviting those interested in the future of microbiome science to engage in this vital conversation.
