UK Launches Campaign to Strengthen Research Ties with Spain and Germany

The UK government has initiated a new international campaign aimed at enhancing research partnerships with Spain and Germany through the Horizon Europe program. This initiative seeks to position the UK as a premier partner in research and innovation, emphasizing collaborative opportunities with UK researchers, universities, and businesses.
Enhancing Collaborative Research Opportunities
Horizon Europe, which operates until 2027 with a budget exceeding £82 billion (approximately €95.5 billion), is designed to support international research collaboration to tackle global challenges. By engaging with this program, UK organizations can access substantial funding and collaborate with distinguished partners across Europe and beyond.
The campaign aligns with the UK’s broader strategy to enhance international partnerships and stimulate economic growth through innovation, as detailed in its Plan for Change. With Spain and Germany identified as crucial collaborators due to their robust research and development capabilities, this initiative aims to solidify scientific ties and foster mutual benefits.
Showcasing Successful Collaborations
A notable example of successful collaboration under Horizon funding is the ESCALATE project. This initiative, funded through Horizon Europe’s predecessor, united UK, Spanish, and German partners to develop affordable electric heavy goods vehicles (HGVs). The £19 million (around €22 million) project involved Yorkshire-based Electra Commercial Vehicles collaborating with Spain’s Primafrio Corporation and Germany’s RWTH Aachen University. Their partnership resulted in significant innovations in modular electric vehicle design and battery systems, opening new commercial avenues in electric transportation.
The UK boasts a robust track record in scientific achievement, having recently secured 56 European Research Council Advanced Grants totaling about £120 million (around €140 millionFacilitating Networking and Access to Funding
To promote effective connections among UK and European researchers and businesses, the campaign will feature a series of networking events throughout 2025. These gatherings are intended to facilitate partnerships and enhance access to Horizon Europe opportunities. Additionally, grants will be available to assist UK businesses in covering expenses related to attending European research and development events. This initiative is part of a comprehensive effort to increase UK participation in Horizon Europe, allowing more organizations to benefit from the program.
Support mechanisms are also available through the Horizon Hub, which is hosted by Innovate UK and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). These platforms offer practical guidance on funding calls, the application process, and connections to Horizon experts and National Contact Points.
The campaign’s launch coincides with the visit of Spain’s Prime Minister to London, underscoring the importance of international cooperation. By highlighting real-world success stories and providing practical tools for collaboration, the UK aims to deepen its scientific relationships with European partners and secure long-term growth in high-potential sectors.
