Danny Batth’s Struggles as Derby County Faces Tough Season Ahead
Derby County’s defender Danny Batth has experienced a significant drop in playing time after starting the season as a key player. The 35-year-old joined Derby from Blackburn Rovers in the summer, reuniting with manager John Eustace. Initially, Batth started in the first three matches of the season, but the team struggled, recording two losses and a draw while conceding nine goals. As a result, he has only made a single substitute appearance since then.
Batth’s absence from the starting lineup raises questions about his future involvement with the team, especially with the return of injured players such as Sondre Langas and Curtis Nelson. His current position in the squad appears precarious, as he now faces competition from both established and returning defenders.
Challenges on the Pitch
Commenting on Batth’s situation, Shaun Woodward, a fan pundit for Football League World, noted that the team’s defensive struggles have contributed to Batth’s limited playing time. Woodward stated, “I don’t think Danny Batth did too much wrong. He’s an older, experienced centre-half that lacks a bit of pace.” He further explained that Batth was thrust into a disrupted backline, which included players new to the club. The team’s inconsistency was highlighted by the three goals conceded late against Stoke City and five at home to Coventry City.
Woodward expressed concern that such performances inevitably affect a defender’s standing in the squad. He pointed out, “As a centre-half, you’re going to struggle to keep your place in the side if that happens.”
With the addition of Dion Sanderson and the potential return of Nelson, Woodward believes Batth has slipped to fifth choice among centre-backs, making it difficult for him to earn playing time even if other defenders face injuries. “I think he will probably be fifth choice centre-half. I can’t see him getting any game time even if players do get injured,” Woodward added.
Derby County’s Season Outlook
Derby County has had a challenging start to the season, currently sitting in 20th place in the league table after nine fixtures, having secured only eight points. This disappointing form puts them at risk of entering the relegation battle if improvements are not made soon. Their next match is scheduled for October 18, 2023, against Oxford United, a team that has also struggled recently.
Despite his limited playing time, Batth’s experience in the Championship remains valuable. Eustace may rely on him for leadership off the field, particularly as the team navigates a difficult period. Batth’s decision to join Derby was likely made with an understanding that he would not be a regular starter, especially given his age.
As the team looks ahead, Batth’s role may shift from on-pitch contributions to providing guidance and support for younger players. Although his position in the squad may be uncertain, his presence could still prove beneficial as Derby County aims to turn their season around.
