Historic World Boxing Championships Kick Off in Liverpool

The inaugural World Boxing Championships officially begins tomorrow at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool. This landmark event will feature over 500 elite amateur boxers from more than 60 countries competing in Olympic-style boxing. For the first time, male and female boxers will vie for the world champion title in the same tournament, marking a historic milestone in the sport.
Boxing enthusiasts can look forward to intense competition across 10 weight classes for both men and women. The roster includes notable athletes selected by GB Boxing, such as Charley Davison (W54kg) and Chantelle Reid (W70kg), both of whom participated in the recent Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Local fighters Odel Kamara (70kg) and Callum Makin (75kg) will also take part, representing their hometown with pride.
Callum Makin expressed his excitement about the upcoming competition, stating, “I got told 12 weeks ago that I would be competing in the World Boxing Championships, and 12 weeks have gone really fast and now it is here.” He highlighted the visibility of the event, mentioning the promotional posters displayed throughout the city, including those at Liverpool’s football ground. Makin added, “It is something that all the city should get behind, as it is an unbelievable tournament, and for me to represent the city and my club, the Rotunda, is incredible.”
Odel Kamara shared similar sentiments, saying, “To be selected for a World Boxing Championships in my home city is a dream come true.” He spoke about the excitement surrounding the event, noting that fans have been inquiring about ticket sales for months. “I want to deliver a performance that will make the home crowd proud,” Kamara remarked.
The competition is set to commence on September 4 and will run until September 14. As the city welcomes this prestigious tournament, the atmosphere is charged with anticipation and local pride, showcasing the rich sporting culture of Liverpool.
