Moyes Shapes Everton’s Future Around Three Key Players
Everton Football Club is experiencing a resurgence this season, currently positioned eighth in the Premier League following a 2-1 victory against Crystal Palace. The club’s supporters are beginning to envision a return to European competition for the first time since the 2017-18 season, when they exited the Europa League at the group stage. Under the management of David Moyes, who returned to the club in January, Everton has recorded only seven losses in 29 matches, highlighting a positive shift in the team’s fortunes.
As Moyes looks to solidify this upward trajectory, he is focusing on building the team around three pivotal players: James Tarkowski, Jordan Pickford, and Jarrad Branthwaite. Tarkowski recently signed a contract extension that will keep him at Everton until 2028, a testament to his critical role in the club’s defense. His consistency and leadership have been instrumental in revitalizing the team’s backline.
Key Players in Moyes’ Vision
Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is another cornerstone of Moyes’ plans. Pickford, whose contract is set to expire in June 2027, has been a standout player since his arrival from Sunderland in 2017. He has established himself as one of the top goalkeepers in Europe and recently made history by surpassing Gordon Banks‘ record for the most consecutive clean sheets for the England national team during a 3-0 win against Wales.
Branthwaite, while currently sidelined with a hamstring injury until November, is also viewed as part of the club’s future. The young centre-back signed a five-year deal in the summer, which has led to his market value doubling, despite interest from Manchester United being repeatedly declined by Everton.
Moyes is not only focused on the defense but also on strengthening the midfield with the inclusion of James Garner. Garner has made significant contributions this season, including a stunning long-range goal against Brighton and an assist for Michael Keane’s goal against West Ham. His performances have been crucial, and he has played every minute of the campaign thus far, acting as a vital link in Everton’s midfield.
Securing the Future
The urgency to secure Garner’s future is mounting, as his current contract expires at the end of the season. Moyes is eager to negotiate a new deal before other clubs can initiate discussions in January. Garner’s ability to adapt and deliver in multiple roles has proven invaluable to Moyes’ strategy, and retaining him could further bolster Everton’s resurgence.
With a clear vision in place, Moyes is determined to build something special at Everton. The focus on these key players signifies a long-term commitment to restoring the club’s competitive edge after years of struggling in the lower half of the Premier League table. As Everton continues its campaign, the performances of Tarkowski, Pickford, Branthwaite, and Garner will be closely watched as they strive to secure a brighter future for the club.
