The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) is considering strategies to bring back Louis Rees-Zammit, following the player’s recent return to rugby after an unsuccessful stint in the National Football League (NFL). The 24-year-old, who has earned 32 caps for Wales, announced last week that he would resume his rugby career after spending 18 months with the Kansas City Chiefs and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

WRU CEO Abi Tierney expressed enthusiasm for Rees-Zammit’s return, indicating that the union is exploring options to facilitate his play in Wales. At a press conference held on August 8, Tierney noted that despite the current challenges within Welsh rugby, including salary cap constraints, there remains a possibility for Rees-Zammit to join one of the four professional Welsh teams.

“I’m over the moon Louis is coming back to rugby because it gives us him for the national team,” Tierney said. “The challenge we’ve got is we’re starting the season in September. Are we in touch with Louis and trying to find a way in which we can make something work? Of course it would be fantastic.”

Tierney acknowledged that Rees-Zammit would likely receive numerous offers, particularly from clubs like Bristol Bears and his former team Gloucester. Former Wales captain Sam Warburton urged the WRU to prioritize securing Rees-Zammit’s return, suggesting they should “throw the kitchen sink” at him to ensure he plays at the club level in Wales.

Tandy Sets Sights on British & Irish Lions Representation

In a separate development, new Wales head coach Steve Tandy has set a goal to increase Welsh representation in the next British & Irish Lions tour to New Zealand in 2029. Following a disappointing performance in the recent Lions tour to Australia, where only two Welsh players were selected, Tandy emphasized the importance of a stronger showing in future selections.

“It’s the pinnacle of the game, the Lions,” Tandy stated. “I would love to see the next time it comes around getting more. A lot of that will be underpinned by how well connected we get with these players and how we can accelerate their development.” Tandy reflected on his experiences with the Scotland team, highlighting the pride in having multiple players selected.

Cardiff Back Rower Eyes Playoff Ambitions

Cardiff back rower Dan Thomas is expressing renewed determination for the upcoming season. After a more successful campaign in the United Rugby Championship (URC) last year, Thomas is focused on helping his team reach the playoffs. The 31-year-old joined Cardiff from Bristol and has quickly become a key member of the squad.

“After being so long at Bristol, it was a change of scenery and it’s been good,” Thomas shared. “We were disappointed not to make the playoffs last season, but it was a step in the right direction. The boys are more hungry now because they know what it tastes like to have a couple of wins under your belt.” He added that winning is “addictive,” and the team is eager to compete for silverware this season.

Health Concerns Force Lusanda Dumke to Withdraw

In a significant and heartfelt announcement, Lusanda Dumke, a flanker for the Springbok Women, has stepped away from rugby due to undisclosed health issues. The 28-year-old captain of the Isuzu Bulls Daisies has earned 33 caps for South Africa and is a former SA Rugby Women’s Player of the Year. Her decision comes just weeks before the Women’s Rugby World Cup is set to begin.

Performance coach Swys de Bruin expressed support for Dumke’s choice, acknowledging her pivotal role within the team. “Lusanda has been pivotal for us, but we now wish her the best as she battles her medical condition,” de Bruin stated. Dumke’s departure will be felt within the team, but her legacy is expected to inspire others who wear the jersey.

The WRU, Tandy, Thomas, and Dumke’s situations reflect the evolving landscape of rugby, with both opportunities and challenges ahead for players and teams alike. As the new season approaches, all eyes will be on how these developments unfold in the world of rugby.
