Charli XCX Takes on Acting in 100 Nights of Hero, Director Reveals

In a bold move for the entertainment industry, director Julia Jackman has cast pop sensation Charli XCX in her first major acting role in the film 100 Nights of Hero. This adaptation, based on the graphic novel by Isabel Greenberg, reinterprets the classic tales of One Thousand and One Nights through a modern lens, focusing on a queer love triangle.
The film features a notable cast, including Nicholas Galitzine and Emma Corrin. Charli XCX portrays a “mythical fairy-tale figure” named Rosa, adding a unique dimension to the narrative. The official synopsis describes the plot as a charming houseguest arriving at a remote castle, leading to chaos among a neglectful husband, his innocent bride Cherry, and their devoted maid Hero.
In an exclusive interview with Variety, Jackman elaborated on her decision to cast XCX. She noted that the singer was a perfect fit for the role, highlighting how their collaboration came about unexpectedly. “It was before the news had broken that she was interested in acting,” Jackman explained. The two met after XCX’s performance at the prestigious Glastonbury Festival in 2024, where her album Brat was gaining significant acclaim.
Jackman recalled, “She had brought her iPad and her notes and was very open and keen to not force things.” This collaborative spirit resonated with Jackman, who was taken by XCX’s dry sense of humor and unexpected shyness. These qualities made her an ideal choice for the enchanting role.
While 100 Nights of Hero marks XCX’s first official film role, she is already set to appear in several upcoming projects. These include Erupcja, featuring Jeremy O. Harris, which will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 4, 2024. Other notable films in her docket include the action comedy Sacrifice, where she stars alongside Anya Taylor-Joy, Salma Hayek, and Chris Evans.
The anticipation surrounding 100 Nights of Hero continues to build, particularly with its premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 5, 2024, and its later screening at the London Film Festival on October 19, 2024. The film’s trailer, which showcases a mystical dream sequence featuring XCX, has already captivated audiences and set a high bar for its release.
As the industry welcomes Charli XCX into the realm of acting, her transition reflects a broader trend of musicians exploring diverse avenues within entertainment. The film promises to not only highlight her talents but also deepen the representation of queer narratives in cinema.
Fans and industry watchers alike are eager to see how XCX’s unique background as a pop star translates to her role in this cinematic reinterpretation. As Julia Jackman leads the charge, 100 Nights of Hero stands poised to make a significant impact in the film landscape.
