Cheltenham Town Signs Jonathan Tomkinson as Squad Reinforcement
League Two club Cheltenham Town has secured the signing of former Norwich City defender Jonathan Tomkinson on a free transfer. The 23-year-old centre-back, who was born in Texas, has signed a contract that extends until the end of the 2025/26 season. This move comes as Cheltenham looks to strengthen their squad after a challenging start to the current campaign.
Despite being relegated from League One in the 2023/24 season, Cheltenham had high hopes for the new season. However, the team has struggled near the relegation zone in League Two, prompting significant changes both on and off the pitch. Last weekend, Cheltenham achieved a crucial 2-0 victory against Fleetwood Town at Whaddon Road, with goals from Isaac Hutchinson and Josh Martin. This match marked the return of manager Steve Cotterill, who previously gained recognition at the club.
The appointment of Mike Garlick as the club’s new chairman has also brought renewed optimism. Garlick’s leadership is expected to guide Cheltenham through a period of transformation. The addition of Tomkinson is seen as a pivotal step in enhancing the squad’s quality, especially after the club faced interest from several competitors, including Championship side Portsmouth and League One teams Reading and Rotherham United.
Tomkinson rose through the ranks of the FC Dallas academy before joining Norwich City in 2019. He turned professional with the Canaries in 2022 and made three first-team appearances over three seasons, largely contributing to the academy. His experience also includes loan spells at Stevenage, Bradford City, and Ross County, where he featured prominently in the Scottish Premiership last season.
As Cheltenham Town aims to secure their position in League Two, the management hopes that Tomkinson’s skills will bolster their defensive lineup. Cotterill’s strategy involves integrating Tomkinson into a back-four system, which may see him debut as early as this weekend against a formidable Gillingham side, currently performing well in the league under manager Gareth Ainsworth.
With Tomkinson’s international experience as a former youth player for the United States, he is anticipated to evolve into a significant asset for Cheltenham Town. His youth and pedigree from a club like Norwich City suggest that he could become a standout player in League Two, helping Cheltenham move away from the threat of relegation.
