Coventry City Thrives as Milan van Ewijk Shines Amid Transfer Speculation
Coventry City has made a remarkable start to the season, remaining unbeaten in their first 12 matches and scoring a staggering 34 goals. Under the guidance of manager Frank Lampard, the team has established a five-point lead over third place, dispelling doubts of a hangover following their playoff disappointment against Sunderland last season. This impressive performance positions the Sky Blues as strong contenders for a return to the Premier League.
As expected from a dominant side, several players have stood out. The addition of goalkeeper Carl Rushworth has proven invaluable, while defenders Bobby Thomas and Liam Kitching form a solid partnership at the back. Midfielder Victor Torp has stepped up in Jack Rudoni’s absence, and forwards Haji Wright and Brandon Thomas-Asante are consistently finding the net. Yet, one player who deserves particular recognition is Milan van Ewijk, whose influence has grown significantly this season.
When Coventry signed Kaine Kesler-Hayden during the summer transfer window, it seemed likely that van Ewijk would leave, especially with speculation linking him to various clubs and a potential £10 million move to Wolfsburg. Ultimately, van Ewijk remained with Coventry, allowing Lampard to benefit from having two talented right-backs.
Despite the transfer buzz, van Ewijk has remained focused. The arrival of Kesler-Hayden has motivated the 25-year-old to elevate his game further. Lampard’s style of fast, attacking football aligns perfectly with van Ewijk’s skill set, granting him the freedom to push forward. His contributions have been significant, with five assists in 12 matches—a remarkable achievement for a full-back.
Van Ewijk’s long throw is another potent weapon for Coventry, as demonstrated in their recent match against Watford. While his attacking prowess is evident, he also plays an essential role defensively, contributing to a back four that has conceded only nine goals this season.
Given his consistent performances, van Ewijk’s value continues to rise. Coventry had initially sought £15 million for him during the summer, but negotiations with Wolfsburg fell through, with the fee settling around £10 million. As his performances improve, the demand for van Ewijk is likely to increase, putting pressure on Coventry to secure a new contract before his current deal expires in 2027.
Should they fail to agree on new terms, the club may face the prospect of selling van Ewijk next summer. Nevertheless, he appears content at Coventry, particularly with the prospect of Premier League football looming. This situation could be a missed opportunity for clubs looking for a talented right-back at a competitive price, as his value may soon soar beyond the £10-15 million range initially discussed.
Ultimately, Coventry City is reaping the rewards of retaining van Ewijk. His emergence as a key player under Lampard underscores the team’s ambitions as they aim for promotion, transforming what could have been a setback into a season of opportunity and growth.
