Driver Flees Police Stop, Throws Officer to Ground in Cumbria

A police officer was thrown to the ground during a dramatic incident involving a driver attempting to evade a police stop in Workington, Cumbria, on June 19, 2023. Dashcam footage captures the moment when the driver, identified as Colin Berry, reversed his vehicle at high speed while the officer leaned into the driver’s side to retrieve the keys.

As the officer reached into the vehicle, Berry, who was already banned from driving, accelerated in reverse. The officer lost his footing and was dragged to the ground. Seconds later, Berry collided with a parked car, intensifying the situation.

Following the event, two police officers deployed their tasers through the van’s window in an effort to prevent Berry from fleeing further. The injured officer later testified in Carlisle Crown Court that he feared for his life, believing he could be run over. He sustained cuts and grazes to his hand, arm, and leg as a result of the incident.

Berry, who has a substantial criminal history with 69 previous offences, pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, and assault causing actual bodily harm to the officer.

Legal Consequences and Sentencing

During the court proceedings, Judge Nicholas Barker highlighted the gravity of Berry’s actions. He stated, “You lost control of your vehicle and as [the officer] fell to the ground he was in great jeopardy. The vehicle could have collided with him or driven over him.”

As a result of his actions, Berry was sentenced to 16 months in prison and received a 36-month driving ban. The judge emphasized the severity of Berry’s driving record, noting that he would not be allowed to drive independently until he has successfully passed an extended driving test.

At the conclusion of the hearing, Berry expressed remorse, stating, “I just want to apologise to [the injured officer].”

This event underscores the risks law enforcement officers face while carrying out their duties, particularly when dealing with individuals known to have extensive criminal backgrounds. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of public safety and the challenges police officers encounter on a daily basis.
