Dublin Entrepreneur Secures €1 Million Win at SaaStock Europe
Dublin entrepreneur David Walsh has won up to €1 million for his startup, Limelight, at the SaaStock Europe Global Pitch competition. The event, held in October 2023 in Dublin, brought together over 4,500 attendees, including 600 investors and more than 90 global speakers. Walsh’s victory highlights the potential of innovative business models in the competitive SaaS landscape.
SaaStock Europe serves as a platform for founders in the AI and SaaS sectors to showcase their ideas. Participants compete for investment packages that can significantly boost their ventures. Walsh, who described his entry into the competition as spontaneous—prompted by “a few too many beers”—found himself on stage in his hometown, delivering a pitch that ultimately secured him the grand prize.
Walsh’s Entrepreneurial Journey
Walsh is no stranger to the entrepreneurial world, having founded multiple ventures. His previous startup, a diversity hiring platform named Mathison, successfully raised $30 million. He also exited from Chase West, a boutique watch brand. Limelight, Walsh’s latest venture, operates as a B2B influencer marketplace, aiming to connect brands with relevant business-focused influencers.
The startup currently employs a small team of just four individuals but is poised for growth. “Winning SaaStock in Dublin was the cherry on top of my other successes,” Walsh noted. Limelight focuses on quality rather than quantity, targeting creators with a minimum of 10,000 LinkedIn followers to ensure effective engagement.
“Companies want to work with niche content creators,” Walsh explained. He emphasized that businesses are increasingly seeking authentic influencer partnerships that generate a higher return on investment compared to traditional advertising methods.
Innovative Solutions for Modern Marketing
Limelight addresses a significant challenge facing brands today: the declining effectiveness of conventional advertising. Walsh stated, “Marketing leaders are struggling to get a good return on their paid ad spend. It’s becoming more saturated.” As a solution, Limelight offers a unique channel that leverages trust in influencers, allowing brands to reach potential customers organically through social media and other platforms.
The SaaStock competition featured three rounds, with Walsh’s entry initially being a last-minute decision. Despite the unexpected nature of his application, his extensive preparation paid off. “I’d gone through my deck a hundred times already during fundraising,” he said. This level of practice ensured that when it was time for his pitch, he could present confidently.
After advancing through the competition’s rounds—from the top 50 to the final five—Walsh’s preparation and delivery stood out, culminating in his win. The €1 million prize will enable Limelight to accelerate its growth, with existing clients including ZoomInfo, HubSpot, and Webflow already utilizing its services.
In addition to his recent funding victory, Walsh has secured an additional €2 million in funding from Silicon Valley Angels. As Limelight expands, he hopes to remain disciplined and focused, hiring for key positions while maintaining a lean operational structure.
Walsh believes Limelight will shift influencer marketing from mere brand awareness to measurable growth. “The biggest moments in your life rarely come from a master plan,” he reflected. “They come from small acts of courage.” This philosophy, along with his commitment to authentic influence, underscores the potential for Limelight to redefine how brands connect with their audiences.
With his winning pitch deck now available for others to view, Walsh’s journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs. His story illustrates not only the power of preparation but also the importance of seizing opportunities, no matter how spontaneous they may seem.
