Firefighters Tackle Major Blaze on Busy New Cross Shopping Street

A significant fire erupted on Hatcham Park Mews in New Cross, south-east London, prompting an extensive response from the London Fire Brigade. Approximately 100 firefighters and 15 fire engines are currently engaged in efforts to control the blaze, which has produced thick smoke and forced nearby residents to close their windows.
The fire broke out early on the morning of March 15, 2024. Initially, the brigade deployed eight fire engines with around 60 firefighters to the scene. As the situation escalated, additional resources were mobilized, including two 32-metre turntable ladders, which are being utilized as water towers to combat the flames from above.
According to a statement from the London Fire Brigade, the fire has engulfed several external balconies and approximately half of the roof space of the building. The brigade has issued a warning to the public to avoid the area and has advised local residents to keep their doors and windows closed to mitigate the effects of the heavy smoke.
The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time, and investigations are likely to follow once the situation is under control. Authorities are monitoring the incident closely and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
The London Fire Brigade continues to prioritize the safety of both firefighters and residents as they work to extinguish the fire. Local authorities are also on standby to assist in any necessary evacuations if the situation worsens.
As emergency crews remain on the scene, the public is urged to stay informed and heed safety warnings. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
