Gillingham FC secured a valuable victory against League Two leaders Crewe Alexandra, winning 1-0 at home on October 14, 2023. Manager Gareth Ainsworth praised his team’s performance and emphasized their ability to capitalize on strategic play, despite Crewe’s numerous attempts on goal.

During the match at Priestfield Stadium, Gillingham demonstrated a strong offensive presence, registering more than double the goal attempts compared to their opponents. Although Crewe hit the woodwork four times and squandered an open goal opportunity, Ainsworth dismissed claims that his team was often under pressure. “I don’t think we were under the cosh,” he stated. “Sometimes they were under the cosh in the second half, but the Rainham End helps that.”

The Rainham End, known for its passionate home supporters, provided an invigorating atmosphere that Ainsworth credited for boosting his players. He remarked, “You feel like you’re away from home and defending all the time because of the Rainham End. You’ve got to realize how important they are.”

Gillingham prepared meticulously for Crewe’s counter-attacking style, focusing on minimizing quick forward plays. Ainsworth noted, “We did a lot of work on making sure that we were very good on the counter-press and stopped any quickly played forward balls.” Despite facing challenges, including being vulnerable to crosses, Ainsworth and his assistant Richard Dobson made tactical adjustments at half-time to improve their performance.

In the second half, Gillingham appeared more dominant, prompting Ainsworth to acknowledge the quality of the opposition. “They’re a good side,” he noted, highlighting players like Tommi O’Reilly, who is on loan from Aston Villa, and their solid defensive line. “They’ve turned some teams over, including a 4-1 victory against Fleetwood.”

Ainsworth expressed pride in his team’s growing confidence as they navigate the season. “We haven’t achieved anything yet, but we’re slowly gaining confidence in each game,” he said. He also recognized the impact of his substitutes, including Aaron Rowe, Sam Vokes, and Jonny Williams, who contributed positively after being introduced. “We’ve got a strong bench, a very good attacking bench,” he added.

After the match, Ainsworth granted his players a well-deserved day off, stating, “Performance-wise, you’ve done enough, that’s your boost.” He emphasized the dedication of his team and staff, who often stay late to ensure success. “It’s all worth it when you get days like this,” he remarked, reflecting on the hard work leading up to the match.

As Gillingham continues to build momentum in League Two, Ainsworth remains optimistic about his team’s potential. “They’re a sensational bunch of boys. I love them to bits and I’m very proud of the effort,” he concluded, recognizing the vital role of their supporters. The atmosphere generated by the Rainham End, he noted, is a significant advantage that can make a real difference in their performance.
