“Gospoda Glembajevi” Takes Center Stage at Niš Theatre Festival

The acclaimed play Gospoda Glembajevi, directed by Danilo Marunović and based on the text by renowned Croatian playwright Miroslav Krleža, will be performed on the evening of October 7, 2023, at the National Theatre Niš. This performance is part of the competitive selection for the sixth edition of the Festival of Drama and Theatre in the Balkans, themed “Theatre at the Crossroads.”

The festival commenced on October 6 and features five competitive productions from various countries, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia. In addition to the main competition, the festival will showcase two performances in its accompanying program. The festival will conclude on October 12 with a special performance of Heinrich von Kleist’s Michael Kohlhaas, directed by Boris Liješević from the Yugoslav Drama Theatre in Belgrade, in honor of the awarded productions.

Dramaturg Božo Koprivica praised Gospoda Glembajevi, noting that it transcends its predecessors and influences through its engaging dialogues, brilliantly crafted characters, and unique stylistic nuances, which stand out in European dramatic literature.

The cast includes notable actors such as Svetozar Cvetković, Mišo Obradović, Kristina Obradović, Una Lučić, Danilo Čelebić, Pavle Prelević, Stevan Vuković, Jovan Dabović, Kristina Mrkić, and Predrag Pavićević.

The festival not only highlights the rich cultural tapestry of the Balkans but also serves as a platform for showcasing emerging talent and fostering collaboration among theatre practitioners across the region. This year’s lineup promises to be a captivating exploration of contemporary themes through the lens of established and innovative theatrical works.
