A yellow weather warning has been issued by the Met Office for parts of the Highlands, anticipating heavy rainfall that could lead to flooding and transport disruptions. The warning is in effect from 17:00 on March 6, 2024, until 06:00 on March 8, 2024, covering areas such as Wester Ross, parts of the Great Glen, and extending east as far as Loch Laggan and Loch Ericht.

The alert encompasses a broad area of Scotland’s western mainland, stretching from the Applecross peninsula in the north to the Mull of Kintyre in the south. It also includes all of the Inner Hebrides, with the exception of the northernmost parts of Skye. The Met Office forecasts that some regions may receive up to 250 mm of rain, particularly over hills and mountains.

Anticipated Rainfall and Impact

According to the Met Office, rain is expected to persist across western Scotland from Tuesday through Thursday night, resulting in significant rainfall totals. The spokesperson emphasized that the heaviest rain will likely occur over elevated terrains, with stronger pulses expected on Thursday.

From late Wednesday through early Friday, the Met Office estimates that 50-75 mm of rain will accumulate widely, while 100-150 mm may fall on west-facing mountains. In some areas, total rainfall could reach as much as 200-250 mm by the end of the warning period.

The spokesperson noted that late Thursday and into Thursday night, the rainfall will likely be accompanied by strong winds. Following this period, there could be a brief respite in rainfall before another wet and windy system arrives on Friday.

Residents and travelers in the affected areas are advised to remain vigilant and prepare for potential disruptions caused by the anticipated weather conditions. The Met Office will continue to provide updates as the situation develops, and individuals are encouraged to stay informed through official channels.
