Isle of Wight Helicopter Crash Claims Lives of Polish Couple
A tragic helicopter crash on the Isle of Wight claimed the lives of Polish nationals Justyna Czoska and Wojtek Kowalkowski on August 25, 2023. The couple, residents of Bloxham, Oxfordshire, were part of a flying lesson when their Robinson R44 II helicopter went down near the A3020 Shanklin Road during a Bank Holiday weekend. Three individuals on board died at the scene, while a fourth was airlifted to hospital in critical condition.
Emergency services responded promptly to the incident at approximately 09:20, but despite their efforts, Czoska and Kowalkowski could not be saved. The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has initiated a formal investigation to determine the cause of the crash, with a team currently on-site gathering evidence.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the couple’s daughter, Julia Buzar, has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help repatriate her mother’s and stepfather’s remains to Poland. The appeal, created by Julia’s partner, Jacob Butler, highlights the emotional and financial challenges the family is facing. Butler wrote, “This sudden and devastating event has left all of us heartbroken and struggling to cope with the loss.”
The flight reportedly occurred as a birthday gift from Julia to her stepfather, Wojtek. Julia expressed her grief on social media, sharing a heartfelt tribute: “I never thought I’d be writing something like this. Please if anyone could help bring them back to Poland so they can be with their families it would mean the world to me.” The fundraiser aims to cover the costs of repatriation, funeral arrangements, and travel expenses. As of Tuesday afternoon, the campaign has raised over £700 through numerous donations.
The local community has been deeply affected by the incident. Donna Jones, Police and Crime Commissioner for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, extended her condolences to the families of the victims. In a statement, she said, “This is a devastating incident that has deeply shocked the local community… The families affected are being supported during this incredibly difficult time.”
Witnesses reported seeing the helicopter spiraling down before it crashed into a field near the busy A3020 Shanklin Road. Northumbria Helicopters, the operator of the aircraft, confirmed that the flight had departed from Sandown Airport and was part of a scheduled flying lesson. The Robinson R44 II is commonly used for both training and private flights.
The AAIB’s investigation is ongoing, and no preliminary findings have been released. Authorities have urged the public to refrain from speculation while the inquiry is underway. As this investigation unfolds, Julia and her family remain focused on honoring the memories of Justyna and Wojtek. Their appeal for support has resonated widely, drawing donations and messages of sympathy from communities across the UK and Poland.
In the words of the fundraiser, “Any donation, no matter how small, will help us give them the farewell they deserve. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your kindness, support, and for keeping our family in your thoughts.”
