Montenegro’s U17 Team Triumphs Over Estonia to Reach Elite Round
The U17 football team of Montenegro achieved a significant milestone by defeating Estonia 1-0 in Tallinn, ensuring their progression to the elite round of qualifying for the UEFA European Championship. Under the guidance of coach Radovan Kavaja, the Montenegrin squad finished the group stage with a total of seven points, outpacing Italy, who also qualified, by one point, while Ukraine and Estonia were eliminated.
In a tightly contested match, Montenegro’s only goal came from Petar Vujović in the 22nd minute. Following a right-side cross, a defensive error led to Vujović receiving the ball about 17 meters from the goal. He took advantage of the opportunity, striking it into the net and securing a vital lead for his team.
Montenegro had already showcased their strength in earlier matches, having drawn against Ukraine 1-1 and secured an impressive 2-1 victory over Italy, the defending champions. The team demonstrated resilience and skill throughout the tournament, culminating in their decisive win against the hosts, Estonia.
Despite the final scoreline, the Montenegrin side could have extended their lead. Notably, substitute Aleksa Caushevich struck the post in the dying minutes of the match after a well-executed turn and shot. This near-miss highlighted Montenegro’s attacking prowess and determination to dominate the match.
The match took place at the Linastadion in Rakvere, where the atmosphere was charged with excitement. The victory not only marks a proud moment for the players but also for the broader football community in Montenegro.
In terms of discipline, the match saw yellow cards issued to players from both teams, including Isok and Mihalevski from Estonia, alongside Đokaj and Kljajevic from Montenegro.
With this victory, Montenegro’s U17 team joins an elite group of competitors vying for a place in the European Championship, setting the stage for future challenges ahead. Their successful campaign in Tallinn underscores the potential of Montenegrin football on the international stage.
As the team prepares for the next phase, the focus will undoubtedly be on building upon this success and further developing their skills and strategies in the upcoming matches. The journey continues, and Montenegro’s young athletes are eager to make their mark in European football.
