Police Increase Patrols at Traeth Llanddwyn Beach This Weekend

Officers will patrol Traeth Llanddwyn beach this Bank Holiday weekend following a surge in antisocial behavior that resulted in the area being locked down for three hours earlier this week. The popular beach, located near Newborough village on Anglesey, has seen a significant increase in visitors leading to concerns regarding safety and environmental damage.
North Wales Police will coordinate with wardens from Natural Resources Wales (NRW) to address unauthorized activities such as fires, barbecues, and wild camping. Individuals caught violating these regulations could face penalty notices. The initiative aims to prevent a repeat of incidents from August 16, when wardens had to close off the beach and surrounding woodland due to being “overwhelmed” by visitors setting up camp and starting fires.
Addressing Safety and Environmental Concerns
Dylan Williams, NRW’s operations manager for North West Wales, highlighted the growing number of tourists engaging in prohibited practices during the region’s hot summer months. He noted that both barbecues and open fires are banned due to the risk of potentially devastating wildfires across the 2,500-acre Newborough Forest. This area, home to Corsican pine trees and stunning coastal views, has become increasingly popular, in part due to its feature in HBO’s series, “House of the Dragon.”
Williams stated, “We are expecting a high number of visitors this weekend and are reminding people that a full ban remains in place for all barbecues and fires following a rise in incidents. Following the exceptionally dry weather, it only takes one stray spark to cause a fire that could devastate wildlife and communities.”
In addition, wardens will monitor the village of Newborough and surrounding roads to address unauthorized parking. The influx of visitors has caused traffic congestion, with vehicles queuing for parking spots at the beach.
Traffic Management and Parking Regulations
To manage the growing number of visitors, new traffic management measures were introduced this summer. Parking charges have also increased, now reaching up to £15 for extended visits. The main beach car park and two smaller car parks in the adjacent forest will close once full, with high demand expected on weekends and Bank Holidays. Reports indicate that these car parks may fill by 10:00 and will remain closed until later in the day, even if spaces become available.
Anglesey Council’s civil enforcement officers are actively monitoring parking in Newborough village and along the A4080 near Llyn Parc Mawr, where there has been an uptick in parking violations. The NRW urges visitors to “park safely, legally, and responsibly” and suggests considering alternative beaches and destinations on Anglesey to alleviate the pressure on Traeth Llanddwyn.
As the Bank Holiday weekend approaches, authorities are hopeful that by increasing patrols and enforcing regulations, they can ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for all visitors while preserving the natural beauty of this cherished location.
