Trump Signs Executive Order to Rename Pentagon Back to ‘Department of War’

President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order on September 5, 2025, to rename the Department of Defense back to its historical title, the Department of War. This decision aligns with the president’s vision to promote a “warrior ethos” within the military establishment, as indicated by sources close to the administration.
The executive order will designate “Department of War” as a secondary title for the Department of Defense. It will also change the title of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to “Secretary of War.” The president has instructed Hegseth to propose further legislative and executive actions to solidify this name change permanently.
Implementation of the Name Change
The implications of this executive order extend beyond mere titles. The federal government will need to update official websites, signage, and other materials to reflect the new name. Notably, the press briefing room at the Pentagon will be renamed the “Pentagon War Annex,” according to a White House official.
This renaming is part of a broader initiative by Trump to reshape the narrative surrounding the military and its operations. By reverting to the historical term, the administration aims to evoke a sense of traditional values associated with military service.
The announcement has sparked diverse reactions, with supporters arguing that the name change honors the historical significance of the military, while critics question the implications of such a shift in a contemporary context.
As the executive order is set to be signed, many are watching closely to see how this move will affect military policy and operations moving forward. The full impact of the renaming will likely unfold over the coming months as the administration implements the necessary changes.
