UK Emergency Alert Test Set for September 7: Key Guidance Provided

On September 7, 2025, at 15:00, the UK Government will conduct a national test of the Emergency Alerts system. This initiative aims to ensure that citizens are aware of how the system functions in case of real emergencies. During the test, most mobile phones and tablets across the UK will receive a test message accompanied by a loud siren-like sound and vibration lasting approximately 10 seconds.
The Welsh Government has issued a warning particularly directed at those who may possess a hidden mobile phone for safety reasons. The alert will activate with a loud noise and vibration even if devices are set to silent mode, unless users have disabled emergency alerts beforehand. This situation poses a potential risk for individuals experiencing domestic abuse, as the unexpected sound could inadvertently reveal the presence of a hidden device.
Jane Hutt, the Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, emphasized the importance of being cautious, stating, “We want everyone in Wales to be safe and informed. While emergency alerts are designed to protect us all, we understand they may cause concern for those in vulnerable situations who have a second, hidden, phone for their safety.” She urged individuals to make informed decisions regarding their devices to ensure their safety during the test.
To prevent hidden phones from being discovered, users can disable emergency alerts in advance. On most iPhone and Android devices, this can be accomplished by navigating to the settings and searching for “emergency alerts.” Users should disable both “severe alerts” and “extreme alerts.” For other types of mobile devices, these settings may be listed under different terms, such as “wireless emergency alerts” or “emergency broadcasts.” In all cases, it is crucial to disable “test alerts” as well.
The Live Fear Free helpline offers valuable resources and support for anyone experiencing domestic abuse. Individuals can reach out for confidential advice at 0808 80 10 800. Additional information, including access to local services, can be found on the Live Fear Free website.
Hutt highlighted the significance of maintaining access to potentially life-saving alerts during actual emergencies on primary devices. “By sharing this guidance in advance, we hope to help individuals make informed decisions,” she said.
As the test date approaches, it is essential for individuals to assess their safety protocols and ensure that hidden devices remain discreet. The Welsh Government encourages anyone in an unsafe household to seek support and take proactive measures to safeguard themselves.
