Waitrose in Newbury is set to undergo a significant refurbishment, aiming to enhance its offerings and customer experience. The plans submitted to West Berkshire Council detail an extensive revamp that includes a new bakery and upgraded meat and fish counters. Completion of the project is expected by early November 2023.

The Oxford Road store is investing several million pounds into this transformation, which encompasses the addition of a new yard and plant area to support store operations. While the renovations are underway, the store will remain open to customers, implementing a phased programme of works.

As part of the refurbishment, there have been 12 objections raised by local residents. Concerns primarily focus on existing noise disturbances attributed to traffic on the nearby A4 road, as well as deliveries occurring at both day and night. Residents have reported disruptions from idling vehicle engines, loading trolleys, and the shifting of stones at the store entrance.

Enhancements to Customer Experience

Among the highlights of the investment is a new “food lovers’ hub.” This dedicated area at the front of the store aims to elevate food discovery for shoppers through interactive digital screens and recipe cards. Additionally, Waitrose plans to expand its wine selection, further enhancing the shopping experience for customers.

Nick Lindsley, the branch manager of Waitrose Newbury, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming changes. He stated, “We have proudly served Newbury for over 10 years, and this investment underlines our commitment to Newbury and the confidence we have in the town. We will make every effort to ensure customers are in no way impacted by the upgrade as they come in for their usual shopping with us.”

As the community awaits the completion of these enhancements, more details will be shared with customers in the coming weeks. The refurbishment reflects Waitrose’s ongoing commitment to providing high-quality service and products to the Newbury area.
