West Berkshire Seeks New Dog Warden Amid Staffing Shortage

The Public Protection Partnership in West Berkshire is actively seeking a new dog warden following the resignation of the previous officer. The team faces increased challenges in managing stray dogs, particularly during the first quarter of the year, when the lack of available kennelling options has compounded existing difficulties.

In addition to overseeing the stray dog service, the dog warden’s responsibilities include verifying dog ownership, reuniting lost pets with their owners, and facilitating rehoming efforts. The role also encompasses handling complaints related to dog fouling, dangerous dogs, and various animal welfare issues.

The demand for these services is evident. A recent Freedom of Information request revealed that the team located a total of 132 dogs across West Berkshire, Wokingham, and Bracknell during 2022 and 2023. Of these, 56 dogs were successfully returned to their owners, while 73 dogs were rehomed from local pounds. Notably, 43 dogs were found without microchips, highlighting the importance of responsible pet ownership.

The team has identified lurchers as the most commonly found breed among the stray dogs, emphasizing the need for targeted outreach and education regarding pet care and identification.
