British Couple Among Victims of Lisbon Funicular Tragedy

A tragic accident in Lisbon on March 13, 2024, claimed the lives of a British couple, identified as Kayleigh Gillian Smith, 36, and William Nelson, 44. The duo was aboard the historic Gloria funicular when it derailed, hurtling down a hill before crashing into a hotel in a busy tourist area of the Portuguese capital. This incident resulted in the deaths of three British citizens, including the couple, and caused injuries to 22 others, five of whom remain in serious condition in hospital.
The couple, hailing from Cheshire, were enjoying their holiday in Lisbon. Just hours before the accident, they shared joyful photographs of themselves at popular sites, such as Sao Jorge Castle. Their untimely deaths have sent shockwaves through their local community.
Cheshire Police confirmed their identities, stating that formal identification is pending. A spokesperson for the police remarked, “We can confirm that two of the individuals who died following the funicular incident in Lisbon are believed to be residents from the North West area. The families of the two individuals have been notified and are being supported by specialist officers at this time. The families have requested for their privacy to be respected.”
Numbers and Impact of the Incident
The Gloria funicular, which has been in operation for 140 years, was crowded with passengers during the accident. In addition to the British couple, the incident claimed the lives of an 82-year-old British man and five Portuguese nationals. Also among the deceased were citizens from Canada, South Korea, the United States, France, Switzerland, and Ukraine.
Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro described the event as “one of the biggest tragedies of our recent past.” Investigations into the cause of the crash are underway, with the government’s office for air and rail accident investigations having completed its analysis of the wreckage. A preliminary report is expected to be released on March 15, 2024.
In light of the tragedy, Keir Starmer, Leader of the Opposition in the UK, expressed deep sorrow, stating, “His thoughts are with their families and those affected by this terrible incident. We stand united with Portugal during this difficult time.”
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has also been in contact with local authorities to support the families of the deceased. A spokesperson noted, “We are supporting the families of three British nationals who have died following an incident in Lisbon.”
As the investigation unfolds, authorities will work to uncover the factors that led to this devastating event, while the families of the victims continue to seek solace amidst their profound loss.
