British Tourist Drowns in Benidorm After Evening Swim with Friends

A British tourist tragically drowned in Benidorm on July 15, 2023, after reportedly swimming in the sea with two friends. The 31-year-old man was swept away from the popular Levante Beach, prompting a search and rescue operation that ultimately ended in tragedy.
According to local police, the incident occurred around 20:00 when the group decided to take an evening swim. While the man’s two companions made it safely back to shore, he was unable to return. Witnesses attempted to rescue him, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
“Several people tried to rescue him but it proved impossible,” a police spokesperson stated. The Coastguard was mobilised to search for the man but could not locate him initially. His body later washed up on the shoreline, where he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The local police confirmed that the death is being treated as a suspected drowning, with an investigation currently underway. Authorities noted that there is nothing suspicious about the incident. A representative from the Benidorm town hall remarked, “It appears this man went into the sea and couldn’t get out. The lifeguard service had finished for the day by the time this happened.”
Further details revealed that the tourist was visiting Benidorm at the time of the incident. Eyewitness accounts suggest he ventured further out into the water while his friends returned safely to the beach.
This tragic event highlights the potential dangers associated with swimming in unfamiliar waters, particularly when lifeguard services are no longer operational. Local authorities continue to urge visitors to exercise caution and remain aware of safety guidelines while enjoying the beach.
