Cameron Mofid, a seasoned explorer who has visited all 195 UN-recognized countries, has identified his top three favorite destinations, highlighting their unique qualities. Mofid, originally from San Diego, California, completed his remarkable journey in April 2023 after traveling to North Korea, a country often overlooked by tourists.

From a young age, Mofid developed a deep fascination with the world. He and his brother would race to locate countries on a giant map whenever their grandmother called out a name. This early interest blossomed into a lifelong passion for geopolitics, geography, and cultural diversity. Despite battling obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), he managed to travel extensively, culminating in his impressive feat before the age of 26.

Reflecting on his travels, Mofid recently shared insights into his favorite countries, which blend tourist hotspots with lesser-known locations. While he previously named Algeria and Yemen as favorites, he has now chosen three new countries that resonate with him for different reasons.

São Tomé and Príncipe: A Hidden Gem

Mofid’s first selection is the less-traveled African island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe. He describes it as a “Jurassic Park-like” destination, where visitors can feel isolated from the modern world. He elaborated on its dramatic landscapes, volcanic peaks, and warm island culture, stating that it is “really the definition of a hidden gem.”

Once a significant producer of cocoa, São Tomé and Príncipe comprises two volcanic islands off the coast of West Africa, known for their untouched beaches, diverse seafood, and lush forests. Mofid’s admiration for this country underscores its potential as an emerging travel destination, despite its historical context as a former Portuguese colony that once relied on sugar plantations and the slave trade.

Palau: An Island Paradise

Next, Mofid highlighted Palau, an island nation in the Pacific Ocean, known for its stunning natural beauty. He describes Palau as “by far the most beautiful country in Oceania,” featuring surreal rock islands, turquoise lagoons, and limestone cliffs.

“There’s this Milky Way Lagoon where you cover yourself in this white limestone mud,” he explains, emphasizing the unique experiences available there. With its limited tourism, Palau retains an untouched quality that appeals to nature lovers. The country’s modest tourism industry has been gradually growing, primarily attracting visitors from Taiwan, which maintains diplomatic relations with Palau.

Japan: A Cultural Contrast

Mofid’s final choice is the more familiar destination of Japan. He describes the country as offering “true culture shock without giving up comfort or safety.” The culinary experiences in Japan stand out for him, as he claims it has the best food he has encountered in his travels.

The contrasting experiences available in cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, Okinawa, and Kobe provide travelers with a rich tapestry of cultural exploration. Mofid appreciates the humility and kindness of the Japanese people, making his time in Japan feel like “five trips in one.”
