A multi-storey car park in Gloucester has been closed for cleaning following complaints about unsanitary conditions attributed to rough sleepers. The Kings Walk car park, located in the city centre, will undergo essential cleaning and is expected to reopen by 7:00 AM on Friday. The closure took effect at 7:00 PM on Tuesday.

Concerns regarding the “disgusting mess” in the car park were raised by residents and motorists. One individual, who contacted the Local Democracy Reporting Service, described witnessing troubling behavior, including a rough sleeper using the area between parked cars as a toilet. She expressed her distress, stating, “I am utterly ashamed of the city, considering it is the county town.”

The car park, which accommodates 291 spaces and four family bays, has become a makeshift residence for several homeless individuals. The resident highlighted the presence of tents and barriers set up in the parking spaces, contributing to feelings of insecurity among those who use the facility.

In response to the situation, a spokesperson for Gloucester City Council confirmed that a dedicated plan is in place to assist rough sleepers in the car park with securing more suitable accommodation. “People who find themselves homeless in Gloucester have access to a comprehensive range of support services, now delivered by the charity Julian House,” the spokesperson stated.

These services are designed to support individuals facing homelessness and include assistance for challenges such as mental health issues, substance abuse, and domestic violence. The City Council has also deployed engagement officers tasked with coordinating support services for homeless individuals, aiming to help them transition into stable housing.

Additionally, the Streetlink referral service remains active, allowing members of the public to report concerns about rough sleepers. This service aims to connect individuals with the help they need as quickly as possible. The council emphasized, “If you know someone who is homeless or at risk, contacting Streetlink is an effective way to ensure they receive the support they need.”

Gloucester City Council has acknowledged the presence of individuals rough sleeping in the Kings Walk car park and reiterated that a proactive approach is being taken to address the issue. The council also extended its apologies for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure of the car park, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a clean and safe environment for all residents and visitors.
