Hikers Discover Bodies of Two Women in Victoria’s Alpine Region
Hikers in Victoria, Australia, made a grim discovery when they found the bodies of two women, believed to be in their 20s or 30s, in a remote area near Lendenfeld Point. The hikers alerted authorities shortly before 13:00 local time on March 15, 2024. The incident took place in the scenic alpine region, known for its stunning landscapes and popular hiking trails.
Emergency services, including the Search and Rescue Squad and Air Wing officers, responded to the scene and initiated an investigation. The remains of the women were located close to the Cleve Cole Hut, a known camping area in the Victorian highlands. While the identities of the women have yet to be confirmed, authorities believe they may have been in the area for recreational hiking.
According to a spokesperson for the Victoria Police, the circumstances surrounding the deaths do not appear to be suspicious. Investigators are working under the assumption that the women may have been enjoying the natural beauty of the region when the incident occurred.
The police are seeking assistance from the public to help identify the women, as they have not received any missing person reports matching their descriptions. The spokesperson noted, “Police are appealing for information from the public to assist in identifying those involved.” Due to the challenging conditions and the remote location, officers plan to camp at the site overnight.
Authorities have confirmed that the investigation into the deaths is separate from an ongoing manhunt for Dezi Freeman, an individual wanted in connection with a series of violent crimes. Freeman is alleged to have shot two police officers, a 59-year-old detective and a 35-year-old senior constable, before fleeing into the bushland. The police stated that there is no connection between the two cases.
The bodies of the women are expected to be removed from the site on March 16, 2024, as police continue their inquiries. The Victorian Alps remain a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, particularly during the Southern Hemisphere’s winter months, attracting visitors for both hiking and skiing.
