Major Logistics Facility Under Construction at Former Honda Site
A new logistics facility is rising on the site of the former Honda plant in Swindon, with a significant distribution centre set for completion in early 2026. The project, developed by Panattoni, involves a 545,000 sq ft warehouse and distribution centre, which marks McLaren Construction’s first collaboration with Panattoni in the South West region.
Construction is taking place on a brownfield site that previously housed Honda, which ceased operations there in 2021. The facility will be located near the M4 and off the A419, an area that has been a source of employment for many in Gloucestershire.
The new Unit 4 will feature two storeys of office accommodation, a decked car park, and improvements to local infrastructure, including new roads and service yards. The construction is well underway, with the steel framework now completed and roofing and cladding work progressing rapidly. The design and build contract is expected to be finalized in January 2026.
Environmental sustainability is a core focus of this initiative. The building aims to achieve BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ certification and an Energy Performance Certificate rating of A+ for the office areas and A for the warehouse. The project also targets net zero carbon emissions for upfront carbon, with a performance goal of under 300 kgCO2/m2.
This redevelopment is part of a larger strategy by Panattoni to rejuvenate the site, which has historic significance as an airfield during World War II before its transformation into a manufacturing facility for Honda in the late 20th century. The extensive development team includes UMC Architects, KAM Project Consultants, and BWB Consulting, with Construction CDM Services acting as the principal designer.
Luke Arnold, regional director at McLaren Construction (Midlands and North), stated, “We’re extremely proud to be working with Panattoni on this flagship industrial scheme in Swindon. It’s a significant step in our growth across the South West and an opportunity to deliver a building of real environmental ambition.”
Panattoni Park Swindon is expected to provide premium industrial space supported by strong transport links and existing infrastructure, enhancing Swindon’s position as a strategic logistics hub in the region.
As this development progresses, it promises to create new job opportunities and drive economic growth, reaffirming the area’s importance in the logistics sector.
