Manchester United Neares Transfer Agreement for Sesko at £74m

Manchester United is on the brink of finalizing a transfer deal for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, with a bid of €75 million (£65.3 million) reportedly on the table, along with an additional €10 million (£8.7 million) in potential add-ons. The move comes amid heightened interest from Newcastle United, who have sought to secure Sesko with a more lucrative package. Despite this, sources indicate that the player’s personal preference may be crucial in determining his next destination.
While Newcastle prepares for a return to the Champions League under manager Eddie Howe, Manchester United is currently not participating in any European competitions. Yet, there is optimism that Sesko may favor a move to join Ruben Amorim‘s squad, who are keen to recover from a challenging 2024/25 season.
Current Status of the Transfer Talks
In recent days, Sesko has been training separately from his teammates as negotiations progress. RB Leipzig confirmed on Wednesday that the 22-year-old was working individually, alongside teammate Lukas Klostermann. The club’s brief statement noted, “Wednesday squad update: Andrija Maksimovic is back in Leipzig, but is training individually today. Benjamin Sesko and Lukas Klostermann are also working individually.”
Renowned transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano provided insights into the ongoing discussions, suggesting that Leipzig may be aiming to extend negotiations to maximize the transfer fee. He stated, “Christopher Vivell is working on this deal because he knows the Red Bull group very well. He is now taking care of the structure of the deal with RB Leipzig to potentially modify the add-ons, making the main part of the transfer fee more guaranteed for Leipzig.”
Romano emphasized that while both clubs are in direct contact, there is an expectation that an agreement could be reached soon. He remarked, “The two clubs are in direct communication, and Sesko is anticipated to become a new Manchester United player.”
Implications for Other Players
The potential acquisition of Sesko may have significant implications for Manchester United’s squad dynamics. Reports suggest that forward Rasmus Hojlund may be forced out of the club if Sesko’s transfer proceeds. There were indications as early as May that the club intended to sell Hojlund, amid ongoing efforts to recruit a new striker.
Sources close to the Danish international suggest that while Hojlund is currently focused on his role at United, he may need to seek a transfer before the deadline on September 1, 2024. Hojlund, who was signed for £72 million from Atalanta two years ago, expressed his intent to remain with United during a recent interview in Chicago. However, Amorim did not confirm whether Hojlund would continue to be part of the squad.
United’s director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, has a history with Sesko, having worked with him during his time at RB Salzburg. Vivell has noted Sesko’s exceptional potential, stating, “Benjamin Sesko is among the game’s top young talents and has enormous potential to become a top player.” He highlighted Sesko’s speed, aerial prowess, and technical skills, making him a standout prospect.
Manchester United’s interest in Sesko is not new; the club attempted to sign him three years ago. However, a £21 million deal was already in place for the striker to join Leipzig after a successful stint at RB Salzburg.
As the transfer window progresses, all eyes will be on Manchester United’s efforts to secure Sesko, as fans eagerly await developments.
