Mysterious Drone Sightings Raise Alarm Across Northern Europe
Suspicious drone activity has been reported over military sites in Denmark and Norway, raising concerns over potential espionage in the region. These sightings follow previous reports of unusual drone behavior near German military installations, prompting heightened security measures.
Early on the morning of March 15, 2024, the Norwegian Army detected a possible drone near the Ørland Air Force Base, which houses the country’s F-35 fighter jets. Guard personnel documented at least two separate incidents of suspicious activity above the base, indicating a worrying trend of aerial surveillance.
In Denmark, similar incidents occurred at the Karup Military Airport, the nation’s largest military facility. The Danish Defence Ministry acknowledged the observation of several drones over various military locations but has not publicly confirmed the specific sites involved. A resident, Christina Jensen, reported that her 10-year-old son witnessed mysterious flashing lights in the sky near Silkeborg, leading to significant distress. “He is sure that war will break out and that he will not be allowed to live,” she stated.
The situation has escalated in Estonia, where a member of the public discovered a drone fragment at the Luitemaa Nature Reserve south of Pärnu. This find has prompted local authorities to investigate potential connections between the fragments and the drone sightings across Europe.
In Germany, authorities in the state of Schleswig-Holstein are examining the possibility that the drones are engaged in espionage or sabotage. This inquiry follows a series of drone sightings that coincided with military drills in Hamburg aimed at enhancing defenses against drone incursions. The state’s Interior Minister, Andreas Sütterlin-Waack, confirmed that police are coordinating efforts with the Bundeswehr and neighboring regions to bolster counter-drone defenses.
The origins and intentions behind these drone flights remain unclear. However, a spate of drone activity has also been noted in Denmark, where operations at the country’s busiest airport were disrupted earlier this week due to unauthorized drone sightings. Reports indicated further drone presence over Aalborg, Sonderborg, and Esbjerg airports, as well as near the Skrydstrup Airbase.
In Sweden, two large drones were observed flying near the Karlskrona Archipelago, approximately six miles from a naval base. This activity is believed to be linked to the disruptions seen in Denmark. Local police, led by investigator Mattias Lundgren, noted that the drones exhibited similar characteristics to those previously spotted in Denmark.
As tensions rise, Jens Jespersen, a police inspector from Copenhagen, indicated that the investigation is focused on understanding the intentions behind these drone flights. “There is nothing to suggest that they intended to harm anyone. They intended to show off,” he remarked.
In response to these incidents, Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen has reached out to Nordic counterparts and NATO for assistance in enhancing surveillance capabilities and technological resources. Meanwhile, drone sightings have also been reported near Oslo Airport, although the connection to the other incidents is still unconfirmed.
The aviation industry remains on high alert following a recent cyber attack that disrupted operations across several major airports in Europe and the United States, adding another layer of complexity to the ongoing drone concerns. As authorities continue their investigations, the public remains vigilant amidst these mysterious aerial activities.
