Police Implement Special Powers After Second Shooting Death
In Wolverhampton, police have activated special stop and search powers following the deaths of two men, including Syed Zain Ali, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a shooting last week. The incident occurred in the early hours of September 19, with Duaine Mills pronounced dead at the scene on Leicester Street.
Ali, a father of three, was initially hospitalized after the attack but tragically died last night. As a response, West Midlands Police have reintroduced Section 60 powers in parts of Wolverhampton, specifically the areas of Whitmore Reans and Low Hill, to enhance public safety and aid in their investigation.
Section 60 Powers Enforced in Response to Violence
The police powers, which allow officers to stop and search individuals without reasonable suspicion, will be active from 18:00 today until 02:00 tomorrow. A spokesperson for West Midlands Police stated, “Our main focus is on keeping everyone safe. There will be an increased presence in the area to offer reassurance to the local community.”
The tragic shooting incident occurred around 03:10 on Friday, leading to the immediate death of Mills. Following the attack, authorities have been actively searching for Mohammed Maneer Khan, a 38-year-old suspect believed to have connections to the area.
Community Impact and Ongoing Investigation
Detective Inspector Joe Davenport from the homicide team expressed deep concern over the loss of life, stating, “Tragically, a second life has been lost, and we are continuing to work 24/7 to establish the full circumstances and to trace the person responsible.” He urged the public to assist in efforts to locate Khan, emphasizing the devastation felt by the families of both victims.
Authorities are asking anyone with information regarding this incident to contact the police by calling 101 and quoting log 358 of September 19. Additionally, information can be shared anonymously through Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
The community remains on edge as the investigation unfolds, and police efforts to restore safety continue in the wake of this tragic event.
