Ricky Hatton Remembered: Daughter’s Heartfelt Tribute at Funeral
The funeral of British boxing legend Ricky Hatton drew thousands of mourners to Manchester on September 22, 2023, following his tragic death at the age of 46. Hatton, who was found dead at his home on September 14, was celebrated for his contributions to the sport and his candid discussions about mental health struggles.
During the emotional service, Hatton’s 13-year-old daughter, Millie Hatton, delivered a poignant tribute that resonated with those in attendance. She asked, “Why didn’t you reach out about how you felt?” reflecting the deep pain and confusion surrounding her father’s passing. This heartfelt question was echoed by many who admired Hatton not just for his boxing prowess, but also for his openness regarding his battles with mental health.
The service was attended by a host of notable figures from both the boxing world and the entertainment industry. Among the attendees were sports icons such as Tyson Fury and Wayne Rooney, alongside celebrities like Liam Gallagher and Paddy McGuinness. Their presence highlighted the widespread impact Hatton had beyond the boxing ring.
Hatton’s three children—Millie, Campbell (24), and Fearne (12)—each shared their memories, creating a deeply emotional atmosphere. Millie continued her tribute by expressing her sorrow over future milestones her father would miss, stating, “I can’t help but think about how you will never walk me down the aisle, how you will never meet my children.” Her words encapsulated the profound loss felt by those closest to him.
In a similar sentiment, Campbell Hatton spoke of the profound admiration he held for his father, saying, “I looked up to my dad in every aspect of life.” He conveyed a sense of disbelief over the loss, sharing, “I can’t believe we’re not going to make any new memories together.” The bond between father and son was evident in Campbell’s heartfelt reflection.
Paul Speak, Hatton’s long-time manager, expressed his belief that Hatton did not intend to take his own life. He recalled their journey through both the highs of boxing and the lows of personal struggles, stating, “If this was 10 years ago, it wouldn’t have been as big a shock as it was.” Speak emphasized that Hatton had been working towards a comeback, which added to the shock of his untimely passing.
The turnout for Hatton’s funeral underscored his status as a beloved figure in the boxing community. Thousands lined the streets of Manchester, paying their respects and celebrating the legacy of a man who not only triumphed in the ring but also fought valiantly against personal demons.
As friends and family continue to mourn, the question posed by Millie serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and the need for open conversations about feelings and struggles. Hatton’s legacy will undoubtedly live on, not just through his achievements in boxing but also through the love and memories shared by those he left behind.
