Senne Lammens Joins Manchester United, Brings New Hope in Goal

Senne Lammens has officially joined Manchester United, completing a move that many hope will reshape the club’s goalkeeping situation. The 23-year-old Belgian goalkeeper arrived at Old Trafford on deadline day, coinciding with a turbulent start to the season for United’s current keepers, Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir.
Following his transfer from Royal Antwerp, Lammens expressed enthusiasm about his new chapter, stating, “You can feel the positive atmosphere that is being created here.” His arrival could not come at a more crucial time, as both Onana and Bayindir are currently on international duty, leaving the goalkeeping position in a precarious state.
Pressure Mounts on Current Goalkeepers
Onana and Bayindir have struggled in recent matches, contributing to costly errors that have already impacted United’s performance in the 2024-25 season. Onana was partly responsible for two goals in the humiliating Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town, while Bayindir’s mistakes against Arsenal and Burnley raised questions about his reliability. As a result, Lammens’ arrival adds further pressure to a position that needs stability and confidence.
Despite not being included in Roberto Martinez‘s squad for the September international fixtures, Lammens is eager to establish himself as a key figure at United. “I know that I can make a real impact at the club in the coming years,” he said, highlighting his readiness to contribute. “This is the perfect place to keep developing, grow together with this exciting team, and achieve my career objectives.”
A Calm Presence Between the Posts
Lammens brings qualities that United has desperately needed. Known for his composure, he believes that maintaining a calm demeanor is essential for a goalkeeper. “As a goalkeeper, you have to stay calm to instill confidence in your defenders and the rest of the team,” he noted in a 2024 interview with Het Nieuwsblad. “They always say that I stay level emotionally. That I’m stable and never go up or down too quickly.”
This steadiness could provide a much-needed foundation for a United side that has struggled defensively. Sir Alex Ferguson once remarked that a great goalkeeper could be worth an additional 15 points in a season. As United aims to stabilize their performance and challenge for a top six finish, the potential benefits of having a reliable goalkeeper cannot be understated.
Statistically, Lammens has proven his abilities, having prevented 17.4 goals in the Belgian Pro League during the 2024-25 season, according to Opta Analyst. His track record suggests he can provide the type of shot-stopping capabilities that United have been seeking.
While the initial priority for United this summer may not have been acquiring a new goalkeeper, the erratic performances from Onana altered the club’s outlook. With Tom Heaton, 39, unlikely to feature after not playing since February 2023, Lammens’ signing could be pivotal in shifting the dynamic within the team.
As Manchester United navigates a challenging start to the season, the introduction of Senne Lammens offers a glimmer of hope. If given a chance, he could not only bolster the goalkeeping position but also help unlock a new era for the club. The upcoming matches will reveal whether Ruben Amorim, the current manager, will place his faith in the newcomer or continue with the existing options.
